Top 10 UFC Fight Card Letdowns of 2009

Top-10-UFC-Fight-Card-Letdowns-of-2009

It seems that 2009 was the year of injuries and letdowns for the UFC and fans. Almost every card had some last-minute alteration to it. Here are our picks for the top 10 letdowns of UFC fight cards in 2009.

10. UFC 98 – Frank Mir vs Brock Lesnar

What Happened: Mir pulled out due to a back surgery. Fortunately, the fight was rescheduled to UFC 100.

Disappointment Level: “Low” The only annoying thing about this rescheduling was waiting two months for a better event.

9. UFC 108 – Gabriel Gonzaga vs Junior Dos Santos

What Happened: Gonzaga pulled out due to a staph infection. The fight has been rescheduled to an unknown date.

Disappointment Level: “Low to moderate” Santos looked great against Cro Cop and it would’ve been awesome to see his skills against a contender like Gonzaga. Other than that, it’s not a fight to lose sleep over.

UPDATE - Dos Santos is facing Gilbert Yvel at UFC 108

8. UFC 99 – Cain Velasquez vs Heath Herring

What Happened: Heath canceled due to an injury. Cheick Kongo stepped in a few weeks before the fight with little time to train and was beaten by unanimous decision.

Disappointment Level: “Moderate” At this point, people were more interested in this rising star than they were the matchup. We were just as satisfied seeing Cain maul Kongo.

OFFICIAL: Matt Hughes vs. Thiago Alves to headline UFC 85 event

Matt Hughes vs. Thiago Alves to headline UFC 85

UFC has announced that the former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes (42-6) and Thiago Alves (14-3) will headline UFC 85 main-event slot vacated by an injured Chuck Liddell.

Dana White:

“Now we will see an explosive matchup between top ten ranked contender Thiago “Pitbull” Alves and two time former UFC World Champion Matt Hughes. Alves is an ATT trained Muay Thai wrecking machine coming off of five straight wins and Hughes is a powerhouse wrestler who was the most dominant welterweight champion in UFC history. These are two of the best athletes in the sport and we are thrilled to bring them to London for the UFC 85 main event.”

Hughes is coming off a UFC 79 loss to Georges St. Pierre for the UFC’s interim welterweight title and Alves most recently defeated Karo Parisyan with a second-round TKO at UFC Fight Night 13 earlier this month which moved him up in 170-pound rankings.

Matt Hughes:

“No matter what happens in this fight, I’ve got Serra next.”

So regardless of what happens, eventually we will (hopefully) see Hughes vs. Serra bad-blood bout.
