Main Event Plus Five Fights Announced for UFC 110

main-event-ufc110

The UFC just confirmed five fights for UFC 110, scheduled for February 20th in Sydney Australia.

Antonio “Minotauro” Nogueira (32-5-1) will still face Cain Velasquez (7-0) in the main event.

Nogueira is coming off a win over Randy Couture (by decision) at UFC 102. He put on a great performance, especially after his previous fight where he lost to Frank Mir at UFC 92. Velasquez is still undefeated, beating Cheick Kongo at UFC 99 and most recently Ben Rothwell at UFC 104. Velasquez has dominated through the heavyweight division utilizing his wrestling but has yet to face a true jiu jitsu technician like Nogueira. We’ll see just how good Cain’s abilities are at UFC 110.

Wanderlei Silva (32-10-1) will go up against Michael Bisping (19-2) as the co-main event. Silva hasn’t looked great since his knockout of Keith Jardine at UFC 84. Most recently, he beat Rich Franklin by decision at UFC 99, but is was long and drawn out. Bisping, on the other hand, rebounded from being knocked out by Dan Henderson at UFC 100 and put on a dominating performance at UFC 105 by beating Denis Kang. Two notes worth mentioning: this is Wanderlei’s first fight since his facial surgery as well as his first fight at middleweight.

Remaining four fights announces on the card:

Joe Stevenson (36-10) vs George Sotiropoulos (11-2)

Keith Jardine (14-7) vs Ryan Bader (11-0)

Mirko Cro Cop (25-7-2) vs Ben Rothwell (30-7)

Elis Sinosic (8-9-2) vs Chris Haseman (20-16)

Sherk To Retain Belt; Penn-Stevenson at UFC 80 for Interim Title

Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports is reporting B.J. Penn (11-4-1) & Joe Stevenson (28-7) will square off in January at UFC 80 in Newcastle, England. Iole states Dana White will not strip Sherk of his title regardless of the outcome of his case…

he’s not going to strip Sherk of his lightweight championship because he is fed up with the California Athletic Commission’s handling of Sherk’s steroids case.

As we recently reported the CSAC issued a second continuance after the commission failed to disseminate evidence presented by Sherk’s attorney to all commision members.

Said Dana White:

The way this whole thing has been handled has been a mess,

White had previously stated he would strip Sherk of his title where he to lose his appeal before the commission but Iole’s article indicates that’s no longer the case. Sherk will presumably reunite the two Lightweight belts once he is either cleared by the Commission or serves his suspension.
