UFC 85: Fabricio Werdum vs. Brandon Vera NOT Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

fabricio_werdum.jpg

Earlier we reported that Fabricio Werdum would get a title shot against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. That is not the case anymore. It seems like Fabricio Werdum (10-3-1) will have to settle for Brendon Vera (8-1). Both are scheduled to fight at UFC 85 on Saturday, June 7 at the O2 Arena in London according to TheFightNetwork.

Brandon Vera recently has lost to Tim Sylvia via unanimous decision at UFC 77: “Hostile Territory”. It was his first loss in his career. Fabricio Werdum is coming off a surprising win over Gabriel Gonzaga.

This is an exciting match up and a good start to UFC 85.

FYI: Fabricio Werdum gets a title shot vs. the winner of Sylvia/Nogueira

fabricio_werdum.jpg

I know, I know, this is a old news (since UFC80) but I just heard it, its quite surprising (for me at least) so FYI after the victory over Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 80, Fabricio Werdum (10-3-1) has been granted a heavyweight title shot. He’ll take on the winner of an interim title fight between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Tim Sylvia that headlines next month’s UFC 81
event.

According to Yahoo! Sports, UFC President Dana White has confirmed Werdum’s UFC upcoming shot at the belt during UFC 80.

Gracie Magazine reports Gonzaga vs Werdum at UFC 80 in Newcastle, England.

The Carioca Gabriel “Napao” GOnzaga finally shall have a chance to avenge his knockout loss to Fabricio Werdum in Jungle Fight 1, in September, 2003. Marco Alvan, leader of Team Link confirmed today exclusively to GRACIEMAG.com that the battle between the black belts will take place in January, at UFC 80, in Newcastle, England.

Napao is recovering from a fractured nose, suffered during his loss to Randy Couture, in August. Werdum, though, has been training hard with his new team, Chute Boxe, since his loss to the Belarusian Andrei Arlovski in April.

“They fought at different times, Napao was 10kg lighter and was not originally on the card. The fight was offered to him at the last moment and they said there was a change in adversary and it would be Werdum. The two have progressed a lot and have what it takes to put on a great fight. Napao thinks the first fight was good and that this one will be even better. He accepted the proposal the minute it was offered,” declared Alvan.

UFC 79: Fabricio Werdum vs. Frank Mir (rumor crushed) (Mir in Feb/Mar 2008)

source: tetame.com

From a recent interview with Fabricio Werdum.

What is the date of your next fight?

I spoke to my manager and he said it would be november or december. It is highly probable that it will be december, because november is too close.

Do you know who it will be?

First it would be Tim Sylvia, but its off. Now I heard it will be Frank Mir. But the way I’ve been training it can be anyone. In the past, MMA was technique, but today its 70% cardio, and thats why I am training hard.

*****

update: Former UFC champion Frank Mir will not return to the octagon until 2008. Mir’s manager, Dean Albrecht, has informed that his return to the UFC will likely come in February or March.
