Sean Sherk Stripped of Lightweight Title

Written by UFCscene

The Wrestling Observer is reporting confirmation from UFC representatives that Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk has been stripped of his title following the CSAC’s decision to uphold Sherk’s steroid charge.

UFC officials confirmed today that Sean Sherk has been stripped of his lightweight championship due to California upholding the steroid test result in the hearing on 12/4.

This was seemingly further confirmed during tonights “TUF” finale when the UFC advertised the B.J. Penn vs. Joe Stevenson bout which takes place at UFC 80 as being for the “Lightweight Championship” as opposed to the “Interim Lightweight Championship”.

Update: The UFC confirms what we previously reported, Sherk is no longer the lightweight champ, Penn & Stevenson is for the full title, and the new champ will make his first title defense against the former champ, Sean Sherk.

Said Dana White:

“I have nothing but respect for Sean Sherk and I believe he’s been honest throughout this whole process,” said UFC President Dana White. “But BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson will be fighting for the lightweight title at UFC 80 on January 19th and Sean Sherk will fight the winner for the title.”
